Airport Workers Arrested Over Leaked Video of American Airlines 5432 Crash

Two employees of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority have been arrested for allegedly leaking surveillance footage of the mid-air collision between an American Airlines passenger jet and a U.S. Army helicopter, a tragedy that claimed 67 lives near Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C.

The suspects, identified as Mohamed Lamine Mbengue, 21, of Rockville, Maryland, and Jonathan Savoy, 45, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, are accused of unauthorized access and distribution of security footage. The video reportedly shows the exact moment a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter collided with a Bombardier CRJ-700 jet.

According to USA Today, the footage was likely part of two clips aired by CNN on Friday, which provided new angles of the crash. However, it remains unclear how the news outlet obtained the video.

During the broadcast, anchor Kate Bolduan described the clip as airport surveillance footage but did not provide further details on its origin.

Suspects Face Charges for Leaking Crash Footage

Authorities arrested Mbengue on Friday, while Savoy was taken into custody on Sunday. Both men face computer trespass charges, according to Fox 5 News.

Investigators Still Searching for Answers

Days after the catastrophic collision over the Potomac River, federal investigators continue to piece together what led to the deadly accident, which occurred just three miles from the White House and U.S. Capitol.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the American Airlines jet was on its final approach for landing when it struck the Black Hawk helicopter, sending both aircraft plunging into the Potomac River on Wednesday at 9 p.m.

A Tragic Loss: 67 Lives Taken

Among the 67 victims were the three soldiers aboard the Army helicopter, who were conducting a classified training mission at the time of the accident. Officials revealed that the soldiers were practicing emergency government evacuation procedures in case of a national crisis or attack.

The deceased crew members have been identified as:

  • Staff Sgt. Ryan Austin O’Hara, 28, of Lilburn, Georgia – Crew Chief

  • Chief Warrant Officer 2 Andrew Loyd Eaves, 39, of Great Mills, Maryland – Pilot

  • Capt. Rebecca M. Lobach

The American Airlines flight carried 60 passengers and four crew members, all of whom perished in the crash. Among the victims were over a dozen competitive figure skaters, many of them teenagers.

Recovery Efforts Underway

As of Monday, search crews have recovered the remains of 55 victims, along with the plane’s engine and large sections of the fuselage.

Images from the site show barges equipped with cranes and mechanical arms lifting wreckage from the Potomac River, marking the ongoing efforts to bring closure to victims' families and determine the cause of the tragic accident.
