Felony Charges Filed Against Man for Throwing Object onto 101 Freeway During Protest

Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman announced felony charges against Martin Richard Torres for allegedly throwing an object onto the 101 Freeway during an immigration protest, with the intent to cause great bodily injury. Torres, 42, faces one felony count of throwing an object at a vehicle or its occupant, and one felony count of vandalism exceeding $400 for defacing a freeway sign. If convicted, Torres could face up to seven years and four months in prison.

The incident occurred on February 3 at approximately 11 a.m., near Spring Street and the 101 Freeway in Los Angeles. Torres is accused of hurling an object at a vehicle during the protest, endangering the lives of innocent individuals. In addition, he is also accused of vandalizing a freeway sign during the protest.

District Attorney Hochman emphasized the importance of peaceful protests, but made it clear that when actions escalate to criminal behavior that puts people’s lives at risk, prosecution will follow. The DA also noted Torres' previous convictions for serious or violent felonies, which could impact the case.

Bail has been set at $775,000, and the charges are being prosecuted by the L.A. District Attorney’s Central Trials Division, with the investigation conducted by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
