Man Faces Life in Prison After Alleged Violent Attacks on Woman and Child

LOS ANGELES — Ishmail Bangura, 33, has been charged with a series of violent crimes after allegedly assaulting a 63-year-old woman and a young child in the Sawtelle neighborhood of West Los Angeles on February 27. If convicted, Bangura could face life in prison.

District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman condemned the violence, especially targeting vulnerable individuals like children and the elderly. “Violence against children and older adults — some of the most vulnerable members of our community — is beyond reprehensible,” said Hochman. “We are committed to keeping dangerous criminals off our streets, and we will vigorously pursue justice in this case.”

Bangura is facing charges in connection with a residential burglary that occurred on February 27. The charges include one felony count of assault with intent to commit rape during a first-degree burglary. The prosecution also alleges that the defendant caused significant injury to the woman during the attack. Additionally, Bangura is charged with felony child abuse, as the child was reportedly exposed to serious harm or potential death.

The attack began when Bangura allegedly assaulted a child inside an apartment complex. He then reportedly entered the home of the 63-year-old woman, physically attacked her, and sexually assaulted her outside her home. Neighbors intervened and law enforcement quickly detained Bangura. The woman suffered significant injuries from the assault.

Bangura was arraigned today and pleaded not guilty to all charges. His next court date is set for April 16 for a preliminary hearing at the Airport Courthouse. Bail has been set at $2 million, and a criminal protective order was issued for the victims.

If convicted, Bangura could face life in prison, plus 13 additional years. He would also be required to register as a sex offender for life.

The case is being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department and prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Matthew T. Bunnett of the Sex Crimes Division.
