After White House Loss, Democrats Seek Change, Poll Shows

A new Gallup poll released on February 13 reveals that nearly half of Democrats, 45%, believe their party should move toward the center after losing the White House in 2024. This marks a shift from previous years, with many members now seeking a more moderate approach. Only 22% of Democrats want the party to maintain its current stance, while 29% want it to become more liberal.

In comparison, Republicans, who currently hold control of the presidency, the House, and the Senate, are more satisfied with their party’s direction. About 43% of Republicans feel the GOP should remain as is, while 28% believe it should shift more conservative and 27% feel it should become more moderate.

These findings reflect Democrats’ dissatisfaction amid high disapproval ratings for their party, while Republicans are riding a wave of high approval. The poll, conducted from January 21 to January 27, shows a noticeable change from 2021, when both parties had more divided views on their ideological futures.

For Democrats, the current desire for moderation is likely a response to recent losses, with many looking to reorient the party ahead of the 2026 elections.
