8 Things to Know About LA’s New Interim Fire Chief, Ronnie Villanueva

Los Angeles has a new interim leader for its fire department: Ronnie Villanueva. He was appointed by Mayor Karen Bass to fill in for Kristin Crowley, who previously served as chief. Villanueva, a retired firefighter, returns to oversee the department temporarily. Here’s what you should know about the new interim chief.

1. A Veteran of the Los Angeles Fire Department
Villanueva isn’t new to the job. He joined the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) in 1983 and worked for 24 years in the field before becoming a chief officer. He held roles such as battalion chief, assistant chief, and Deputy Chief of the LAFD South Bureau, which includes the southern areas of Los Angeles. His past assignments also include serving as a Captain at Drill Tower 89 and Battalion Chief in the Community Liaison Office.

2. He’s a Local
Born and raised in San Pedro, Villanueva attended local schools, including San Pedro High School, Los Angeles Harbor College, and California State University Long Beach.

3. Prepared for Leadership
Villanueva has always aimed for leadership. In 2022, he earned a degree from the Executive Master of Leadership Program at USC. He joined the program to further his education and prepare for new career possibilities, which could include politics after his retirement from the LAFD.

4. Enjoys Family and Staying Active
Outside of work, Villanueva loves spending time with his family and staying fit. He enjoys exercising and playing golf in his free time.

5. A Mentor Throughout His Career
Villanueva has always been dedicated to mentoring younger firefighters. He served as an Explorer Post Advisor at Fire Station 2 and Fire Station 16, helping guide the next generation of LAFD professionals.

6. His Love for the Department Brings Him Back
Villanueva's passion for the fire department is what led him to come out of retirement. He expressed his gratitude for the bravery and dedication of LAFD members, especially after witnessing their efforts during last month’s fierce firefighting battle in Los Angeles.

7. His Role is Temporary
Villanueva is only serving as interim chief. While he’s in charge, Mayor Bass will conduct a national search for a permanent replacement. She plans to gather input from both firefighters and residents about what qualities they want in the next fire chief.

8. His Time May Be Cut Short
There’s a possibility that Villanueva may not stay in this position long. Under the City Charter, the mayor has the power to remove department heads without City Council approval. However, former Chief Kristin Crowley can appeal the decision. Councilmember Monica Rodriguez has shown support for Crowley and encouraged her to pursue an appeal.

Villanueva’s return marks a new chapter for the LAFD, but time will tell what comes next for the fire department’s leadership.
